Begin your exploration of Barcelona by strolling down La Rambla - the 2km boulevard linking the Port Vell (Old Port) with the Placa de Catalunya. Bustling and lively, it is home to countless cafes and restaurants and thronged with people enjoying the buskers and mime artists. The Barri Gotic (Gothic quarter) lies east of La Rambla and is part of the old town. It is a not to be missed medieval warren of narrow streets and attractive little plazas literally bursting with bars, cafes and restaurants. Take time to savor its unique buildings and distinctive atmosphere.Barcelona’s cathedral is the city’s most magnificent example of Gothic architecture. Imposing and elegant, people come to see a performance of the traditional Catalan dance known as the sardana here every Sunday at midday. Just east of here is the engrossing Museu d’Historia de la Ciutat - the City History Museum - which features an underground walk through excavated portions of Roman and Visigothic Barcelona. The Musee Picasso on Carrer de Montcada is the city’s most popular museum. It showcases the artist’s fascinating Barcelona periods. Don’t miss seeing the Sagrada Familia church - the project to which the inspiring architect Antoni Gaudi dedicated his life. The Fundacio Joan Miro is also well worth a visit. Dedicated to the most famous Catalan artist of the 20th century, the collection features hundreds of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and textile works. The Parc de la Ciutadella and the old port make for interesting, pleasant walks and the city’s markets are a great place to shop. Check out the large Els Encants flea market at Placa de les Glories Catalanes and the antiques market on Placa Nova.
