Things to Do When Moving House

  1. Give Notice to Your Landlord

If you rent your current house, you need to give notice to your estate agent or landlord. Check the specific requirements of your tenancy agreement. This is because you may have to hand in your notice one or two months before moving out. Your contract may have a break clause, especially if you have been renting your current house for under a year. Once you confirm your moving date, you can now give notice to your landlord.

  1. Declutter Your Home and Hire a Removals Company

Remove your belongings from your home. Book a good removals company. You can even ask the removal company for their estimate. The company can check your belongings before giving you their estimates.

If you do not need some items, you can donate them. Pack your non-essential items and store them in a storage facility. You can also store your large items in a storage facility. It is best to use temporary storage during your move. You, however, need to get enough packaging supplies and boxes for packing your belongings.

  1. Children and Pets

If you have children and pets, you can look for new schools before moving. However, if you are only changing addresses, you can send the new address to your children’s schools. Book a cattery or kennel for your pets. They can take care of your pets on your moving day. You have to take care of your children and pets on your moving day.

  1. Update Your Details

You need to update your details in different places. Therefore, notify the right people. If you want to move to a new location, you may have to register with a new dentist or doctor. If you are not changing your current care providers, you can send them your new address.

  1. Check Your Vehicle and Route

If you will drive over a long distance on your moving day, you need to check your car tyres and get your vehicle serviced. Check your route to ensure there are some places you can stop. You may have to stop for breaks or fuel.

  1. Pack Up and Shut Down

Pack your belongings a few weeks before your moving day. You want to ensure you have packed up everything before your moving day. Packing your belongings early can give you peace of mind. Get high-quality boxes for packing your belongings. And clear out kitchen cabinets and defrost and dry out your freezer/fridge. Do not forget to your garage and loft.

You can now contact your estate agent or solicitor to confirm your move. Do not forget to check for any delays before your moving day. The delays can delay your move.
